Ninh Binh Sunset Motorbike Tour: Mua Cave, Bich Dong, Hoa Lu Review

Alright, so let’s get right into it. I took the Ninh Binh sunset motorbike tour, the one that hits Mua Cave, Bich Dong Pagoda, and Hoa Lu. You know, the ancient capital? Here’s my take, aiming to give you the scoop so you can tell if this kind of trip might be right for you. Ninh Binh has this special kind of charm that really gets under your skin. It’s not just some pretty scenery; there’s something almost magical about it, you know? So many limestone karsts sticking out of the rice paddies, it’s almost like something out of a dream. A motorbike? Well that gives you the freedom that can be kind of hard to beat, the freedom to stop just where you want to, drink in the view at your speed. I was honestly hoping for an adventure. I hoped to see more of rural Vietnam, more than just the normal tourist spots.

What to Expect from the Mua Cave Climb

Mua Cave Dragon Statue

Alright, let’s talk about Mua Cave. Specifically the climb! The main thing people go for at Mua Cave isn’t actually the cave itself, is that clear? So many photos you will have seen online, yes, that is the majestic view from the very top of the mountain. So really the goal is to climb all the way to the top of that mountain, and honestly see that view yourself! This means you have to get your walking boots on. And seriously prepare yourself. It’s quite the ascent! Basically expect a whole lot of stairs. Many, many steps await! The steps could be uneven, and in some places it’s just a narrow path made of stone that snakes upwards, yet as I was taking the tour at the end of the afternoon it was slightly shaded from the trees.

Alright, so, getting to the top. It’s tiring, no point pretending it isn’t, however it is manageable! If you’re reasonably fit, more or less. Remember it is at your own pace. Stop as and when you want too. Also please factor in the heat! I would thoroughly recommend taking water, or just buying some once at the bottom of the mountain. This might seem very obvious. However it’s not only about staying hydrated. I really was appreciative of pouring a bit of water over my head in order to keep cool as I reached various stages. So reaching the peak of Mua Cave, especially with that beautiful sunset tour. That’s when it becomes truly spectacular. At the summit you’re treated to 360-degree views of Tam Coc. It can be rather busy though.

Now then, the views. Just magical. Those limestone karsts, it’s something you have to take a look at to appreciate. That said, at least when I was there, the actual path to the Dragon statue could be very busy with everyone trying to get that very Instagram shot. People could be selfish. Some of them anyway, that is! A good tip may just be to stand to the side. Just appreciate the surroundings for some time. I can appreciate that people wanted their photo in that exact location. But frankly, seeing it, feeling it, being up there, trumps any kind of photo you might want to have!

Experiencing the Spirituality of Bich Dong Pagoda

Bich Dong Pagoda Entrance

So, Bich Dong Pagoda? Well this is a bit different than Mua Cave. Instead of an intense climb, Bich Dong brings things down a bit and then leans on serenity and history. The Pagoda itself is beautifully constructed into the mountainside. You kind of just walk around at a comfortable pace, not at all out of breath! The pagodas are a series of structures built into the caves, and they have different levels. This blends so beautifully with the landscape. Seriously! It’s something worth checking out!

Now, as you are walking, and of course inside the Pagoda too, you’ll get a real sense of the deep spirituality, the kind that you’ll find across so much of Vietnam. There’s an atmosphere of calmness that makes you slow down. In some respects you start to really think too. In this particular Pagoda, I saw more monks than at any of the other Pagodas and temples that I visited in Ninh Binh. It was a really interesting experience, observing the Monks go about their prayer.

So, let’s be clear, dressing appropriately is rather crucial. Dress respectfully, covering your shoulders and knees when you are inside. You would dress like this if you were visiting temples at home. Just do the same as you travel! Remember, it’s a place of active worship. If you dress respectfully, that displays your respect and just creates a more meaningful experience for everybody. Keep voices low, be a considerate tourist, and try not to disrupt the quiet that way. I believe this is rather essential. The less noisy the tourists are, then surely this can ensure the Pagoda remains a haven of quiet meditation and reflection.

Stepping Back in Time at Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

Hoa Lu Ancient Capital Temple

The last spot, and truthfully a total contrast from both the spiritual vibe of Bich Dong and the scenic climbs of Mua Cave, alright. The Hoa Lu Ancient Capital is the real history piece. Hoa Lu, in the 10th and 11th centuries, was actually the capital of Vietnam! You see different parts of it today in different temples, dedicated to various Kings, more or less. The most impressive thing to me anyway, it isn’t the temples by themselves, it’s actually walking around the grounds. Seriously! I found this quite cool, and pretty special.

So, Hoa Lu doesn’t really have towering buildings and grand palaces anymore, you know. That stuff basically disappeared a long time ago, to be honest. Instead, what is there? The well-preserved temples offer up lots of information, like insight into the past. I have to say, though, reading about the history beforehand really enhanced my experience quite a lot. It can paint such a better picture for you, in your head, rather than wandering around ancient ruins, scratching your head, thinking, okay what exactly am I looking at!

Alright, let’s discuss the weather, alright? Hoa Lu doesn’t offer any sort of escape from it, not like Mua Cave (with shade). Certainly not in the same way as Bich Dong, where you do end up inside the caves a lot. This means that in summer you should think about a hat, and sun cream. At any time, take water. Staying hydrated is kind of important to be honest! And truthfully if it really is too hot then it might be something for you to avoid in the peak summer heat.

Riding Through Ninh Binh at Sunset: The Motorbike Experience

Ninh Binh Motorbike Rice Paddies

So, between these destinations, and frankly equally important, is the motorbike bit itself. Alright? Truthfully, this could be the absolute highlight of the entire tour. Getting onto that bike, alright, it does give you that certain sense of freedom. Seeing Vietnam up close, yet this could be something of a shock!

Honestly, that is how to travel and see the proper Vietnam. The villages become the main tourist attraction here. If that makes sense? These little quiet corners really show the way people have been living in Vietnam for a very, very, very long time. Seriously. It is worth seeing! Anyway just pull over, and watch!

Please do make sure you have confidence on a bike! Also just double check everything like helmets. At the very least you should make sure that you are safe, with the correct documentation for riding a motorbike. It is something worth considering if you plan to ride. That said, some people get drivers and still get this sort of experience. This is really down to personal preference, and in some respects, personal safety too! You should assess yourself honestly before just getting on the bike and attempting to ride around in foreign countries.

Things to Keep In Mind for the Best Possible Experience

Ninh Binh Rice Paddies Boat

Now, a few important pointers! So it’s not just all the beautiful sunsets and gorgeous views. So keep some things in mind so that you get the most out of your trip! Planning properly makes the experience ten times better.

First off, what time of the year? So you can see, and also get the best of what you expect! If you wish to see the lush green of the rice paddies, it might make more sense to look at Spring and Summer. I do recommend that you look it up! Honestly it does depend what sort of vibe you are chasing after! It all looks so different depending on when you are there!

Don’t just stick to the schedule. I mean these tour operators, these people they work for, sometimes that has a bit of influence as to where you might stop to buy a drink or get something to eat. So just have the confidence in yourself, frankly, that you are able to ask, “oh can we stop there? that looks pretty cool”. If that makes sense? Then you are much more likely to get that tailored experience which I touched on at the beginning.

Costs, Timing, and What to Bring Along

Tam Coc Boat Tour

What might be handy to know, basically, is how much it will cost! It depends on several factors such as: who you decide to tour with and frankly just how much you get haggling too! It’s possible to get some extremely tours at lower cost but perhaps do make sure, that all of your entrance fees are included. Otherwise you might have a nice “surprise” along the way! Just have a check. Most of the half-day tours include things such as water, a guide, perhaps a meal. They usually get going sometime after 1pm. Why? Because there is so much less crowding in the popular destinations. All in all they can finish around 7pm, perhaps even after that! I mean who does not like watching the sunset! I know that I do. At the very minimum pack these: light clothing, sunscreen, insect spray, and just a small backpack for just storing all the “essential” items along your adventure!

So I’ve gone on at length with many explanations as to why you need to take this sunset tour and when! Honestly? Ninh Binh has it’s own identity. Not to mention the places too! From the caves right through to the boat rides. They all work as a nice change. This will provide any traveller a fresh adventure they are craving!
