So, and also right next to that is, right, the Presidential Palace is equally captivating, maybe just because of the guards and the flags waving overhead or something. Very impressive, right? As I was saying, it is rather a hub of, well, historical significance.
Then, basically, there’s the churches. Now, I’ve seen my share of churches, still the Iglesia de San Francisco really took the cake. It’s extremely huge, that building seems like it stretches on forever and the guide tells you that it holds so much history, it feels sacred, so that experience is almost overwhelming. Actually, what made it unforgettable, right, was the mix of architectural styles, because in the long run it seemed, to tell an amazing tale of Quito’s past.
Standing on the Middle of the Earth: La Mitad del Mundo
After Old Town, the tour really heads up north to La Mitad del Mundo, really. This location, right, you might’ve heard is where, theoretically at least, the equator passes through. After a bit, getting there was like a scenic drive, with the landscape turning more mountainous so you kinda notice the landscape from Old Town shifting like this.
Well, the monument there, to be honest, is the main attraction. But what is interesting, it’s, like, not necessarily the accurate equatorial line these days, like it’s seemingly proven. But that still is sort of, gives that fun novelty thing, to get that photograph, and of course that classic one where you put a foot on both hemispheres at the same time and stuff. Though tourists flock around that equatorial line monument like birds so anyway, I kinda lined up and waited patiently, for my turn so I got my memories immortalized into digital prints, too. That actually shows that I was at both sides of the hemispheres on Earth simultaneously, that really sounds cool doesn’t it?
And as a matter of fact, nearby, the Intiñan Museum offered, surprisingly enough, what looks like a, kinda quirky counterpart to that scientific vibe, right. This museum has all sorts of demonstrations proving that Coriolis effect exists right on the equator; still they look a bit unconvincing now and again and that creates like a playful air between belief and, very, healthy skepticism and stuff.
Gastronomic Detours: Food and Drink
So anyway, a full-day tour isn’t complete, of course, if, seemingly, you don’t have lunch right. My guide had some amazing recommendations, I chose a little local place to try some real Ecuadorian eats instead. Well, things like the, locro de papa a potato soup dish that warms you from the inside and empanadas that are fresh out of the oven can be quite tempting right? These culinary stops, arguably, were such a tasty little window into what people eat locally daily so it felt really great, to just see things differently from my own home.
The Guide Makes a Difference, Very
Anyway, what made the whole experience, to be honest, right, was really the guide. This guy really knew literally, almost everything. He also was able to kinda, go off topic once in a while, as a matter of fact, it felt more like learning from a pal that’s very passionate with history. You know, always kind of have an expert leading you, I’m, more or less, feeling that I am getting so much value from this particular kind of trip.
You know, small group or private tours really let you take the pace, right, they also can address what specifically gets you going rather. He really could tell what, you know, I liked and what interested me more and tweaked the plan a little. That kind of treatment is absolutely invaluable in the long run.
