Choquequirao Hike Review: 4 Days, 3 Nights of Adventure
So, you’re thinking of heading out on the Choquequirao hike, are you? Very good. As a matter of fact, this stunning 4-day, 3-night adventure is just a bit of a great alternative to the very, very famous Inca Trail, offering a less crowded, yet arguably, just as impressive experience. Actually, I wanted to share, you know, my take on this trek, touching on everything from the trail’s terrain and the ancient ruins to the challenges and, arguably, the many rewards that await. Anyway, getting ready for this hike requires a good, decent level of fitness and, really, a spirit for adventure, and I wanted to get into the why that’s, you know, rather vital, right?
What Makes Choquequirao Special, You Know?
As a matter of fact, Choquequirao, which is almost known as Machu Picchu’s “other” sister city, so too it almost stands high in the Andes Mountains. Basically, unlike its famous counterpart, Machu Picchu, Choquequirao is, in some respects, more remote. You know, in other words, fewer tourists get here, offering a more solitary and arguably spiritual connection to the ancient Inca civilization. So, that, combined with, I mean, absolutely astonishing mountain views, creates a trek that is, I want to say, a class all its own.
It turns out the name Choquequirao translates to “Cradle of Gold” in Quechua, giving a hint to its value, that is. Clearly, the city has terraces, plazas, and temples, similarly to Machu Picchu. Anyway, experts believe that, well, it was a royal estate and maybe also a religious center. Either way, Choquequirao holds quite a bit of historic appeal.
Day 1: Cusco to Capuliyoc and Trek to Chiquiska
So, the hike starts super early. Actually, there’s typically a pick-up from your Cusco hotel and, pretty much, a drive to Capuliyoc, which is the trailhead. That’s already high, even, a little over 9,500 feet. Now, this day, anyway, is mostly descending into the Apurimac River canyon, that is really, really something.
As I was saying, the descent, you see, can be a bit tough on the knees. To be honest, trekking poles would, like, totally be helpful! Anyway, you pass through these views that are breathtaking and that get more incredible as you lose altitude. In fact, arriving at Chiquiska means you’re, you know, ready to camp near the river and enjoy a well earned dinner.
Day 2: Chiquiska to Marampata and Choquequirao
Anyway, this day, so too it’s almost considered the toughest! Now, get ready to, like, ascend out of the canyon. Basically, the trail winds uphill toward Marampata. What is worth saying, is that it offers some, kind of, stunning views that make up for the difficulty.
As I was saying, reaching Marampata, so too it’s almost like a breather before that, literally, final push to Choquequirao. As a matter of fact, when you finally arrive at the ruins, and well, seriously, it’s quite the reward. So, that panoramic vista of the mountains makes you think “Wow!”. Well, I certainly thought “wow”, I’ll say.
Day 3: Exploring Choquequirao and Descending to Santa Rosa
Now, spend the day really checking out the Choquequirao site itself. Clearly, this includes a walk through the many terraces and visiting different temples and living quarters. As a matter of fact, there are also llama designs on the walls in a place. How wild is that!
You can picture the lifestyle in ancient times as you get around this very site. So, after, and really in the afternoon, the journey moves downward. And then, to the valley floor, you are led down again, all the way to Santa Rosa, your camp to sleep over.
Day 4: Santa Rosa to Capuliyoc and Return to Cusco
Anyway, the final day involves climbing back up. By the way, back up toward Capuliyoc. You might see the same things from before, and remember the descent? The climb now? Is harder! By the way, you’ll finish it when you get back to Capuliyoc, where the bus expects you, and can send you home back to Cusco.
As I was saying, this last leg provides, well, a mix of achievement with reflection. Really, you get the time to reflect on everything you’ve experienced and seen. Just a bit. I should say, of what you now can remember, that is.
What to Pack for the Choquequirao Hike
Okay, I’m thinking that good gear matters. After all, it keeps you doing alright on the trail. I’d give these items some hard thought:
- Backpack: a good one that carries 50-70 liters and can haul what you might need.
- Trekking Boots: you just might wanna go for broken-in ones. Blisters can hurt real, real badly.
- Clothing: I think, you may wanna add layers in preperation of weather changes that occur. And also, hiking pants that also convert to shorts
- Rain Gear: Always, so too it’s almost better to be protected than drenched.
- Sun Protection: Bring the glasses. Use skin cream for shielding too.
- Water and Snacks: Always store too much, because it helps one.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Hike
Want to make your hike an absolute great hit? I think that a little thinking of preparation helps with being one with your environs. Here, by the way, are thoughts for what I’m thinking of:
- Acclimatize: Stay in Cusco a good several days so as to fixate the mountain elevation.
- Hire a Guide: A good guide increases a person’s trek so far! Plus he increases the awareness of what one can know!
- Pace Yourself: The incline. Don’t, too it’s almost make too heavy, as it causes burnout for people
- Stay Hydrated: Don’t forget. Try and add one more gulp. Because that has big help!
- Respect the Environment: Bring your refuse trash from whereever it starts from so no harm happens!
Is Choquequirao Hike Difficult, Very?
And I think that yes, the Choquequirao hike is very difficult and pretty challenging. So, you need to consider some pretty heavy incline on the paths. Also, being far will also increase weariness. But, if you feel like you’re ready and healthy, the experiences are very rewarding. I’d call this trip memorable and full of the wilderness! As a matter of fact, it tests an hiker, because it brings him the great big world.
What’s Better Than the Inca Trail Hike?
Anyway, here are main reasons what makes it top draw.
- Smaller amount of people, other than tons. Get pleasure for that peaceful one, for that solitude is, when hiking. This one will be, just like a break from groups for an open time, that you can use to, just meditate by oneself.
- Untarnished surroundings A break from heavy building, but something not as visited by person, because of that has less wear. Find what mother ground give now, it’s almost better that your eye will behold! It also give some wild encounters of a good sort from other sort of things.
- Extra for the wallet? Because the trails for Inca Trail fill in one rapid take, and so their worth also heightens for to buy, picking this might protect cash in one place from somewhere else and better it for you.
Well, the Choquequirao hike may test will and grit! Seriously, every step has value of view into mountain life along ancient Peruvian living! It shows how tough person can overcome hardship as part and the place. Is good chance what must not lose for the person looking not well from crowd, for one in finding of peace where ground still can say something new with story!
