I mean, it’s, like, this dream destination for so many people looking for a really awesome wildlife experience, and honestly, a safari hitting up Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro in just five days? It, apparently, sounds pretty intense. We went, we saw, and so, yeah, we’re ready to break down just what you might expect. This isn’t simply, perhaps, a highlight reel. It’s, sort of, a peek at what it’s really like when you cram three iconic parks into a pretty quick trip. So, is this trip worth your money and, perhaps, your precious vacation time? Let’s get into it, right?

5-Day Tanzania Safari Review: Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Group Adventure

Day 1: Tarangire – The Elephant Playground

Okay, so, day one, that, apparently, means Tarangire! Often it’s a bit overshadowed by the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, Tarangire turns out to be pretty spectacular, too. I mean, this is, perhaps, elephant central. The sheer number of these gentle giants, as a matter of fact, gathering around the Tarangire River is, literally, mind-blowing. So, that day, actually, involved lots and lots of driving. That is that after arriving in Arusha, we set off for Tarangire, which, in a way, is about a 2-3 hour drive depending on the traffic, right?

Tarangire National Park

I will say, though, that the drive itself, kind of, is a chance to soak in the Tanzanian countryside, arguably. We saw Masai villages and bustling markets. It really got you in the mood, right, I suppose, for adventure. Our first game drive, though, was something else. Aside from, I mean, the elephants, which you just couldn’t miss, we spotted giraffes gracefully munching on acacia trees and prides of lions lazing around in the shade. So, that evening, perhaps, we stayed at a lodge near Tarangire. It was super comfy, too, which we were grateful for after a long day of travel and exploring. It’s almost like sleeping to the soundtrack of the African bush. That really did give the day a touch of magic.

Days 2 & 3: Serengeti – Endless Plains, Endless Wonders

The Serengeti. Even saying the name feels really epic, that is. We had two full days, too, here, and honestly, that’s probably the minimum you need, so, really, to even scratch the surface. The drive from Tarangire is, definitely, lengthy – expect about 5-6 hours, that is – but seeing that it changes over, really, it’s an experience in itself. You transition to more or less rolling hills, seemingly, before it expands into this seemingly never ending grassland, so, really, which is the Serengeti.

Serengeti National Park

What really stood out those two days? Honestly, just a little of everything! We witnessed, very, very, large herds of wildebeest. That’s like seeing literally an ocean of animals move at once. We, as a matter of fact, even spotted the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino – albeit seeing the rhino, typically, requires a bit of luck and some eagle eyes from your driver. Game drives, typically, began early. So, that we could catch the animals, typically, at their most active. The sunrises alone, honestly, were worth waking up for. Then we had downtime in the afternoon, typically, for lunch at the camp and that’s followed by another game drive late afternoon before it gets dark, alright. Staying in a tented camp right in the Serengeti was a highlight. So, you’re out in the wild with just a canvas between you and wildlife. A night listening to the sounds of the Serengeti is truly unforgettable, and so it also may not be for the faint of heart!

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater – A World Within a World

Ngorongoro Crater is, in some respects, like stepping into another planet, as a matter of fact. The Serengeti plains disappear behind you as you head, actually, up to the crater rim. It really gives you stunning views looking out over this gigantic sunken volcano. The drive down into the crater is, apparently, quite steep and bumpy, too, yet it adds to the adventure. The crater is just packed with animals! Because of the constant water supply and enclosed setting, you find so many creatures there. I remember lions stalking their next meal. Flocks of flamingos dyed the soda lake bright pink, seemingly. Black rhinos munched quietly in the distance. I mean, in such a short span of time it was animal viewing overload. It, almost, felt surreal.

Ngorongoro Crater

Something else, you know, made the experience special. Our guides had so much knowledge. They, almost, explained the ecosystem inside and out, that is. It’s kind of incredible how all these animals live together in one smallish spot. Lunch, typically, happened next to a hippo pool. That, too, makes for an unforgettable picnic location, actually. In the late afternoon, though, we headed out and up to a nearby lodge just outside Ngorongoro so, that we were closer to our route back the next day.

Day 5: Farewell Tanzania – Departure and Reflections

Day five, the end had arrived, finally, or, alright, near enough. That morning was, sort of, a relaxed start. I mean, after a relaxed breakfast, we drove back to Arusha to then catch a flight home, okay? That gave us time to really think, actually, about what we’d experienced over those few days. It was quick, very quick actually. However, those are just a few things I could think of on the last leg of that five-day expedition.

Departure and Reflections

Is five days, I wonder, honestly, enough time for such an adventure, finally? So, it’s absolutely fast-paced, that’s what it is, of course, as I was saying. So, you spend a good chunk of time just traveling between places, that is that, arguably. However, what this trip gives you, in short, is a taste. It hits the highlights. I mean, you witness incredible wildlife, experiencing really stunning views, and then getting insight to Tanzanian natural beauty, actually. If you’re short on vacation time or just want a great introduction to safaris, this five-day stint will give you loads for your money, so, really, okay. Those who like spending more time at certain destinations may prefer stretching this itinerary out to seven or even ten days, as a matter of fact.
