3 Days in the Albanian Alps: An Expert Review
So, planning a quick trip to the Albanian Alps? Very, very cool choice! That place is honestly spectacular, with views that just don’t stop. We’re talking towering peaks, those vibrant green valleys, and villages that look like they’re straight out of a movie, like, the kind you just can’t believe exist in the 21st century. You can actually totally disconnect and soak up some totally unforgettable moments, even if you only have a handful of days to work with.
Day 1: Arrival in Shkoder and Journey to Valbona
Okay, day one actually begins with you, like, landing in Shkoder, that major northern city. It’s usually easiest to fly into Tirana’s airport, and from there, it’s typically a fairly short bus or taxi ride, pretty much just right to Shkoder. That city is where things seriously kick off.
Now, depending on how you, like, schedule things, you might have a tiny bit of time to quickly roam around Shkoder a bit. You could easily grab a pastry or two, sip on some, very, very powerful Albanian coffee, and, you know, basically get a feel for the culture before things move onwards and upwards. Alternatively, or possibly, even skip it and hit the road as soon as you show up. Your goal, right, that has to be reaching Valbona Valley, which is almost like the gateway to the Alps. A minibus or a private taxi usually is what it takes to get to the town of Koman, where things tend to get truly interesting. This will be some pretty winding roads, too it’s almost your initial taste of that terrain you’re moving towards, still a scenic one, mind you.
From Koman, there’s basically only one pretty, much dependable option: a ferry through Koman Lake. We actually kid you not, that journey might be one of those things that totally blows your mind. The lake snakes through super steep gorges; the views are honestly unreal. Think glassy water and peaks that are covered in vibrant vegetation and what might be small villages clinging to the hillsides. That is totally your Insta moment, alright. The ferry ends in Fierze, where a minibus usually will be waiting to do that last part to Valbona. Getting to Valbona very, very late is pretty much something you probably are aiming to sidestep, but still, that entire stretch can pretty much eat up a significant portion of the day. In the late afternoon you are there at your guesthouse. Freshen up quickly, since you are now enjoying nature’s calm. Consider dining at your guesthouse this night too, it’s almost a lot better since they normally serve very good Albanian dishes and produce. That also sets you up well for a fresh begin to hike tomorrow.
Day 2: Hiking Valbona Pass to Theth
Now, the hike from Valbona to Theth going via Valbona Pass is one of those super popular routes, honestly iconic, and probably what brought you here. It’s actually challenging, I mean, physically, and, you know, demanding. It’s not something a person who usually, typically binges TV would jump off the couch to do without getting ready. That trip requires being at least, like, somewhat ready, and typically takes anywhere from, say, six to eight hours, like, on average. Most importantly, though, what it brings is views, after views, after views that totally cement just why you came all this way. So, to sum it up, that is your day!
Anyway, seriously get started sort of at the beginning of the day. Like sunrise. That climb at the beginning can be quite testing, but it just gets much, much better when you get higher. As you do move ahead and upwards, very quickly you are likely gazing back towards Valbona. So, to sum it up, now things appear tiny below, enclosed by the mountains, and they have that very peaceful vibe. You’re also trekking towards the Pass, along steep, rocky paths, alright.
Once, potentially once you’re near the summit – I am talking that Valbona Pass – it will be an almost crazy view. Okay, you might have peaks behind you now on one side and honestly vast, totally new valleys and ranges stretched ahead to the opposite. Snap some pics, have some fluids, you’ve gotten to the tippy top point!
The trail comes on, moving down to Theth. Very similar to before it’s somewhat rocky; having trekking poles isn’t the worst possible idea. And trust me the moments are special. See herds grazing as it slowly goes downhill, get that fresh mountain wind you love as you breathe the air.
When finally getting down in Theth, give yourself that victory meal. You finished! Seriously though, getting situated there makes a huge change after that walk; you likely won’t be heading out on any other excursions this day. That remote village is special by itself and well loved with tourists, with that famed church situated in the very core, along with different cultural and historical points you might decide you wanna look at more closely. Really, relax that very night; pat yourself from surviving a pretty strong trek and get ready for exploring again when daylight happens.
Day 3: Exploring Theth and Return to Shkoder
Day three will almost surely be exploring the attractions near Theth, followed by traveling back again. That city comes loaded with various locations well loved with photographers and also travelers wanting a bit of tradition.
Possibly the image from Albania you have caught? Very, very likely that’s the famed Theth Church. It makes a solid start spot while roaming. With the rugged landscape backing the church that it stands in, is basically iconic and definitely one worthy of clicking pictures.
Near, almost near this village, is the so named Grunas Waterfall. With some time put into it trekking from where the center spots are it is for sure gorgeous, definitely when that river’s very vigorous and pounding down with tons of water. Very similar to being somewhere magical is exactly what you should prepare for – getting moist might occur; coming closer could be actually really very dangerous depending on water height.
After some exploration it is most likely your ride awaits to bring you away and bring you to Shkoder. Like before the routes can sometimes take many hours with the rough nature related to that environment. Getting back into Shkoder means it will probably feel almost surreal going again to that bustle after being with peaceful nature all around.
